Imaging Microscopy Core

Overview of Services

The Imaging Microscopy Core, directed by Dr. Alexandru Movila, is a core laboratory of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH). The Core is equipped with a Leica Stellaris 5 White Light Laser confocal microscope providing an extended near infra-red detection range from 440nm to 790nm, thereby enabling bone researchers to exploit intravital imaging of live bone as well as ex vivo imaging of live osteoclast and osteoblast lineage cells as well as fixed bone tissue. The Core will enhance our understanding of in vivo bone homeostasis because our knowledge about bone biology predominately comes from ex vivo static imaging approaches, including histology, light and electron microscopy, and micro-computed tomography. However, static imaging limits our ability to understand bone cells and their function and cannot convey the dynamic nature of bone formation and resorption. The core provides standard training in intravital live animal and ex vivo fixed tissue and bone cell confocal imaging. The Core also provides consultations for the design and tissue staining for confocal fluorescent imaging studies. The Core director has established collaboration with ICMH faculty, demonstrating fully established and mature collaborative relationships.
